Lesser Known Cannabinoids: CBN, CBC, and CBG

CBN: Cannabinol, or CBN, is a cannabinoid that is created from THC as it ages and degrades. CBN works primarily as a sedative agent, but it has also shown properties of being an anticonvulsant, an anti-inflammatory agent, and having antibiotic properties. As a topical product, CBN may help with conditions such as psoriasis and treating burns. CBN is about a ¼ as potent as its precursor THC, and the degradation of THC into CBN can be sped up by exposing cannabis to light and heat.

CBC: Cannabichromene, or CBC, is a non-intoxicating cannabinoid that acts similarly to the cannabinoid CBD. One of the most abundant cannabinoids, CBC’s effects manifest as strong inflammation reduction and stimulates THC’s analgesic pain-relieving properties. CBC has also shown promising effects on increasing the viability of neural stem cell progenitor cells. This means that CBC can help the cells that create neural stem cells stay alive, which in a cascading effect helps brain function to stay healthy and fight disease.

CBG: Cannabigerol, or CBG, is another non-intoxicating cannabinoid that works to reduce pain, inflammation, and redness in the skin. The receptors that CBG stimulate suggest that CBG may also work to relax muscles and as an anti-depressant agent. Additionally, CBG has moderate anti-fungal effects and is remarkably effective against MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus). Promising studies also show that CBG in high doses destroy cancerous cells, most effectively against breast and prostate cancers.

Taking The Hit: CBN Transdermal Patch from Mary's Medicinals

About an hour or so was left in the movie I was watching, so that meant it was time to wind down for the night. I paused my movie and put my CBN patch on my wrist. The CBN patch started to make me feel a little bit drowsy during the last half hour of my movie, and had me nice and relaxed by the time it was ready to go to bed. My body was relaxed and my eyes were heavy. Normally I stay up an hour or two later than I did this night, and typically get up every couple hours. This night I only woke up once and otherwise slept heavy through the night.

Taking The Hit: The Cannabinoid CBN

I don't know many people who will argue with me when I say that the end of cannabis prohibition is a positive thing, but to the few who have something to say I immediately point to the quickly growing pool of research that it has provided about this fascinating plant! With cannabis becoming legal in many states it has allowed scientists to identify over 113 cannabinoids in the cannabis plant, and study how each interacts with our endocannabinoid system in different ways. When it comes to the effects of marijuana compound, THC and CBD receive most of the attention, and while they may deserve the spotlight, today I want to focus attention onto my friend CBN.

CBN is a mild psychoactive cannabinoid that is produced from the degradation of THC naturally over time or when exposed to heat and oxygen. There is usually a trace amount of CBN found in the flowers of a fresh plant, but only after months of aging will the numbers typically increase above 1%.  The benefits of CBN haven't been fully discovered due to the fairly recent research into its specific properties, but we have already found dozens of medicinal benefits on the user such as: providing pain relief, promoting bone cell growth by triggering stem cells, stimulating appetite, and working as an incredibly sedative sleep aid.

It is also proving to be anti-inflammatory with the additional benefit of reducing mucus and showing signs of helping with asthma and glaucoma, it acts as an anti-convulsive- though it doesn't seem quite as effective as THC and CBD here, and it also has an incredible anti-bacterial effect that has shown the ability to kill MRSA, which is an antibiotic-resistant staph infection that kills thousands of people in the US every year. There are other promising effects of the compound that will soon help the medical world in the areas of burn treatment, psoriasis, and so many more, as it has shown to lower body temperature and to limit an overgrowth in skin cells.

What was once looked down upon as a less psychoactive product of poorly stored flower is now being recognized as an incredibly complex and important cannabinoid that is inspiring a lot of new research. Many growers are figuring out ways to encourage larger amounts of CBN, and the key seems to be time. By pushing the harvest time back it allows the tricomes to develop a deep amber color before harvest. During the curing process it can be tricky, as the goal is to slightly degrade the THC without lessening the quality of the flower. By using high humidity packs, poking holes in the lid, and storing the cannabis in clear jars with access to lots of light, it allows the highly psychoactive compound to break down into the deeply sedative CBN without losing flavor or quality.

Taking The Hit: CBD/THC 1:1 Transdermal Patch from Mary's Medicinals

CBD/THC 1:1 transdermal patch produced by Mary's Medicinals

I used one of the 1:1 CBD/THC patches to help me with my back spasms. I placed my patch directly on the area where my spasm is strongest, (upper left back between shoulder blade and spine) and started to feel relief in about 20 minutes. The initial relief started lightly but progressed quickly. About 45 minutes in to using the patch my spasms were much milder than they were before. I would have small little flare ups of my back spasm throughout the night, but that is typical even when I am using muscle relaxers. On top of the relief I was receiving from the patch for my back, I was feeling relaxed and it even made me tired about two hours after putting the patch on. I personally did not feel much of a psychoactive effect due to my high tolerance to THC, but some users will feel psychoactive effects from this product.  I used this product as medicine for my back spasms and it helped for over 6 hours and had the added benefit of helping me fall asleep.
