Lesser Known Cannabinoids: CBN, CBC, and CBG

CBN Transdermal Patch made by Mary’s Medicinals

CBN: Cannabinol, or CBN, is a cannabinoid that is created from THC as it ages and degrades. CBN works primarily as a sedative agent, but it has also shown properties of being an anticonvulsant, an anti-inflammatory agent, and having antibiotic properties. As a topical product, CBN may help with conditions such as psoriasis and treating burns. CBN is about a ¼ as potent as its precursor THC, and the degradation of THC into CBN can be sped up by exposing cannabis to light and heat.

CBC: Cannabichromene, or CBC, is a non-intoxicating cannabinoid that acts similarly to the cannabinoid CBD. One of the most abundant cannabinoids, CBC’s effects manifest as strong inflammation reduction and stimulates THC’s analgesic pain-relieving properties. CBC has also shown promising effects on increasing the viability of neural stem cell progenitor cells. This means that CBC can help the cells that create neural stem cells stay alive, which in a cascading effect helps brain function to stay healthy and fight disease.

CBG: Cannabigerol, or CBG, is another non-intoxicating cannabinoid that works to reduce pain, inflammation, and redness in the skin. The receptors that CBG stimulate suggest that CBG may also work to relax muscles and as an anti-depressant agent. Additionally, CBG has moderate anti-fungal effects and is remarkably effective against MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus). Promising studies also show that CBG in high doses destroy cancerous cells, most effectively against breast and prostate cancers.

Taking The Hit: Sour Tangie High Terpene Extract Produced by White Label Extracts

Sour Tangie High Terpene Extract produced by White Label Extract from flower grown by Raw Zen

I've been leaning into extracts as my main source of cannabis lately. Not only do I get better flavor from extracts than flower, but it is also a more discrete form of consumption, and it's better for my body than smoking flower. White Label Extracts is by and far the company that I purchase extracts from the most. White Label has a great range of price points, extracts of different consistencies, a rotating library of strains, and above all else always put out top shelf oils.

This time around they've created a high terpene extract out of my favorite Sativa strain Sour Tangie. If you've never had the pleasure of meeting a Sour Tangie strain, this is a cross of Tangie and Sour Diesel. Sour Tangie is best known for it's Valencia orange and pine scent and it's mood boosting effects. What's special about this rendition of Sour Tangie, you hypothetically ask. That's where the High Terpene part of the extract comes in, as this has a 9.12% terpene profile!

Terpenes are aromatic molecules which create scent and flavor. The White Label Sour Tangie has an orange scent, and a syrupy "terp sap" consistency. I love the flavor that I get out of these dabs, and I like to vaporize them at lower temperatures to get the most out of it. This strain has such pleasant effects. The high is energetic without pushing me into anxiousness, it's also euphoric and slightly relaxing. I have a bit of trouble keeping this extract on my dab tool, due to the sauce-like consistency, so I tend to use this dab the most by dipping my other more solid extracts into it. It pulls any strain I'm smoking into a happy, talkative, tasty direction.

Taking The Hit: Raspberry Sky Distillate Shatter from Winberry Farms

Raspberry Sky distillate shatter produced by Winberry Farms

This is the second time I've gotten to try the Winberry Farms distillate extracts. The first of their extract strains that I tried was the Tropical Trainwreck, you can find that review here. I was impressed with the flavor and effects of the Tropical Trainwreck, so I jumped on the chance to try the Raspberry Sky.

Raspberry Sky has the same beautiful soft yellow coloring that the Tropical Trainwreck distillate had. It sparkles as it catches the light, and has a consistency like dry clay. Stable at room temperature but easy to crumble and break with a tool.

The flavor was surprisingly similar to real raspberries, though it had a slightly more candied flavor than actual raspberries. It was like how I imagine a real life blue raspberry would taste. It had a very nice smooth smoke, and thanks to some recent upgrades to my dabbing equipment, I was able to dab it at a low temperatures.

As far as the effects go, this was certainly a more sativa strain than the Tropical Trainwreck distillate was. I was clear headed and functional on this strain, and filled with energy to do things (read: clean my house and play games). Sometimes, if I smoked a bit too much at once, I would notice a slight headache from being too high. It's easy to do with this strain, as it tests at 82.9% THC.

A fun strain while it lasted! Now I just need to try the Guava OG!

Taking The Hit: Brain Freeze Pull-N-Snap Produced by Tree Honey

Brain Freeze Pull-N-Snap produced by Tree Honey

This is the first extract I've had the chance to try from Tree Honey. Tree Honey, produced by Claywolf, is usually a slightly darker or less stable oil than the traditional Claywolf brand of extracts. I got to try the strain Brain Freeze, which is a Sativa hybrid extract with a Pull-N-Snap consistency. The oil has an amber/orange coloring to it, and is definitely on the tackier side of a Pull-N-Snap. I found that popping it in my fridge when I wasn't using it helped to solidify the oil when I was using it to dab. I'm not sure if it's the paper that Tree Honey is using or the oil itself, but the oil did not want to let go, and I may have torn a hole or two in the paper trying to get it off.

My favorite part of this oil is the taste. It tastes very much like cloves, hops, and wood, and has just as much flavor as Claywolf's original line. It seriously reminds me of pumpkin pie spice when I taste it. For a Sativa hybrid it gives me quite a strong head change, and it triggers my appetite so I like to smoke it when I know I'm going to have a meal or a snack. It is not sedative, but I wouldn't say it gave me a particular burst of energy either.

Brain Freeze tests at 66.4% THC, and sells for R$21 per gram. After trying this, I will be picking up new Tree Honey strains in the future.

Taking The Hit: Tropical Trainwreck Distillate Shatter from Winberry Farms

Tropical Trainwreck distillate shatter produced by Winberry Farms

Winberry Farms has a knack for creating great tasting distillate oils. For a while now, they've been my go-to company for buying distillate vape cartridges. Their blackberry cream tastes just like one of those Creme Savers candies I used to eat as a kid. The Mango Super Silver Haze is incredibly reminiscent of a pomello, being both fruity and floral. So Tropical Trainwreck is just what you would expect from the name, and gives off a strong fruit punch flavor.

Tropical Trainwreck distillate shatter produced by Winberry Farms

I have tried Winberry's Tropical Trainwreck strain before in a cartridge, so I thought I knew what to expect from this oil in a dab-able form. To my pleasant surprise the flavor and effects of the dab was much more intense than the cartridge. To start, the distillate Tropical Trainwreck shatter is an astounding 86.5% THC! Which meant that I only had to use a small portion of the oil to reach a very comfortable high.

The flavor of the dab was also creamier than I remember the cartridge being, while still having that signature fruit punch flavor. The color is a soft, almost powdered yellow, that sparkles when it catches the light. The texture is surprisingly soft for a shatter. The oil had a soft give more like a hard dough than a brittle shatter, and I appreciated not having to worry about any errant shatter trying to jump away. Tropical Trainwreck is a sativa-hybrid, and the high for me was very cerebral. It's a strain that won't put you to sleep, but can still space you out.

While a bit pricey for me to buy as an everyday strain at R $75.60 / M $63, I would definitely consider picking up Tropical Trainwreck, or a sister strain, for a special treat in the future.

Taking The Hit: Sour Diesel Olive Oil from Little House Foods

Sour Diesel Olive Oil produced by Little House Foods

My default assumption from pop-culture was that edibles were sweet treats like chocolates and brownies. So when a new product, like the Little House infused olive oil, comes into our store it catches my attention. Olive oil is an interesting thing to dose with THC. It's not an get-and-eat edible that you pop in your mouth and enjoy like a truffle. (I mean, unless you want to.) It takes a bit more thought into how you're going to prepare it to eat. Especially since I most commonly use oil to roast potatoes in the oven, and I felt like that would be wasting the oil in the pan.

Inspiration first struck me when I was wandering around the grocery store. I was picking up some bread and passed by a display of hummus! If you didn't know, one of hummus' main ingredients is olive oil. I scooped out about a 1/4 of a 10oz  package of hummus and mixed in the entire 5mL of the dosed olive oil. To my delight the hummus completely absorbed the oil that I added in, and I couldn't taste any of the common cannabis-plant flavor that is sometimes found in savory edibles.

The next time I buy this olive oil I plan on creating a dipping plate with it, a nice raspberry balsamic vinegar, and a loaf of freshly baked french bread. Since I couldn't taste the cannabis flavor of the olive oil when I used it in the hummus I think this olive oil can be used as if you had a traditional olive. It could be easily used to top some pasta or create a salad dressing.

Sour Diesel Olive Oil from Little House Foods

Sour Diesel Olive Oil from Little House Foods

I have used coconut oil tinctures before for baking, and olive oil would be another good substitute if you're a fan of sweet treats. This recipe is very close to the pie crust recipe that I use at home, and makes a great based for a dosed pie crust as you don't need to alter the recipe at all. Since the crust of the pie is dosed, the fillings of the pie could be left untouched, creating a balance to any herbal flavor the crust would have. Dosing is a snap for pies when the crust is what you're infusing. If you split your pie into even pieces all you need to do is diving the amount of THC you've put into the crust by the number of slices to find out the dose per slice. For example, if you put the 50mg olive oil into a six slice pie, you would have about 8.3mg of THC per slice. (50mg of THC / 6 slices = 8.3mg of THC per slice of pie)

The olive oil is a steal at R $12 / M $10 for a full 50mg of THC. It's also a strain specific edible, currently the ones we have in the shop are made with Sour Diesel which is a Sativa strain. This is definitely an edible that I'll be picking up again!

Taking The Hit: Kings Pure Kush grown by Kings Cannabis

Kings Pure Kush grown by Kings Cannabis

I've tried King's Pure Kush flower in both the 1/2g pre-rolls and bulk flower options. The pre-rolls come in a cute cone canister which is sealed closed. I like the way that King's designates what strain is in a pre-roll container by the color of the cap, Pure Kush for example has a white lid, while GG #4 has a black cap, and Chernobyl has silver. I do wish this packaging was child-resistant re-sealable though, as I don't often remember to bring an exit bag in with me when I'm picking up a pre-roll.

The pre-roll was rolled well, not stuffed too tightly to where I couldn't pull through the joint, or too loosely which could cause the joint to stop and start. Even in a pre-roll the flower had a beautiful creamy vanilla sweetness to it. The flower smells strongly of sugar and earth. There was a creamy sweetness to the smoke that reminded me strongly of cookies and cream. It's got some good looks too, a light green flower and a very frosty coating. The high was heavy and sedative, and after a sharing a few bowls with my bestie we were both falling asleep on the couch.

Taking The Hit: Black Lime grown by Dicot Farms

Black Lime is an Indica hybrid strain grown by Dicot Farms. The first thing that caught my attention was how sticky and fresh the flower felt. Just pulling the bud apart to put it into my grinder left the tips of my fingers coated in resin. The Black Lime flower has a mossy yellow-green color, with a thick coating of trichomes and dark orange-brown hairs. It smells sweet, like fruit candy or a lime tart, with a touch of mint on the end. I smoked this strain out of a beaker bong with some Hemp wick as my fire source. The smoke was smooth, I think in part due to how nice and moist the flower was, and had a hint of sweet mint in the smoke. I was surprised to notice that I felt very awake, focused, and slightly buzzy with energy. This Indica hybrid is relaxing but definitely not sedative. Overall a great high.

Taking The Hit: Sativa Fruity Nut Bar produced by Laurie + MaryJane

Sativa Fruity Nut Bar produced by Laurie + MaryJane

I tried the Sativa Fruity Nut bar from Laurie + MaryJane just last night. The Fruity Nut Bar has a really nice crisped rice texture to the bar and tasted much like a rice-based power bar with lovely hints of fruity dried apricot and chocolate. There was a definitely a plant-like cannabis flavor when you bite into the bar but that flavor didn't stick around to the aftertaste. I think it's great that these edibles are strain specific, and they come packaged with a nice cardboard insert inside that had a guide for how to cut the bar into 5mg doses. The high for this edible was very energetic and functional.  I could definitely tell that it was a more sativa edible experience, and I would definitely try this edible again.

Taking The Hit: Sour Tangie Petites Pre-rolls Grown and Produced by Cascade Valley Cannabis

Sour Tangie Variety Petites Pack grown and produced by Cascade Valley Cannabis

I am a huge fan of Sativa strains and Sour Tangie is one of my absolute favorite strains. Cascade Valley Cannabis has been growing this strain for at least the past two seasons, and it's an attention grabber. This strain consistently tests in the high teens or early twenties for THC percentage. It's got an incredibly sweet citrus scent, when I think of Tangie, this is the scent I imagine. This latest batch of Sour Tangie has a nice floral undertone to it to go with the citrus. This strain gives me a nice boost of energy when I smoke it, and I really enjoy how spacey the head effects can become, and like all of my favorite strains this one has a great body buzz to it.

Sour Tangie 1/2g pre-roll grown and produced by Cascade Valley Cannabis

Cascade Valley Cannabis is the first company that I've seen that makes these perfect for one or two people petite sized pre-rolls. Each petite pre-roll is a 1/4g of cannabis, and a petite pack comes with four of these 1/4g pre-rolls. When I'm smoking a pre-roll alone or with another person I often can't smoke an entire half gram or whole gram of flower in one session.  But finishing off an already smoked joint later is not a pleasant experience, as the remaining flower is tastes like stale smoke. The only way I've gotten a good second round out of a pre-roll is emptying out any slightly charred flower before it's put away, but then I feel like I'm wasting bud. A petite pre-roll is a great compromise, and as a bonus, I can have a pack of j's on me for any occasion.

Taking The Hit: Cherry Vanilla Cookies grown by Higher Minds Horticulture

Cherry Vanilla Cookies grown by Higher Minds Horticulture

Higher Minds Horticulture is a small batch indoor farm based in Eugene, and they make some of my absolute favorite flower. Their new Cherry Vanilla Cookies has a scent almost like a dragon fruit, sweet with light fruity and floral undertones. There is such a thick layer of trichomes on the outside that the color of the flower has turned pastel. Underneath the layer of trichomes you can see hints of dark green bud and orange hairs. When the flower is ground surprising purple tones and a spectrum of green tones are revealed. The structure of the bud is also very dense and well trimmed.

The sweet scent of the flower comes through in the flavor of the smoke. The first time I tried this strain out I was drinking a cola and combined with the smoke from this strain it almost tasted like I was drinking a cherry cola! For me the effects of the strain feel really relaxing, but not sedative, with a strong body buzz. It was a fairly functional strain, I felt like if I wasn't focusing on something I would start to space out, but it wasn't overall difficult to focus. I decided to do some morning stretches to help wake up after smoking this strain and I now understand what it feels like to be an indulgent cat in the sun. This 50/50 hybrid is a great anytime strain, with both relaxing and alert aspects. 10/10, I bought this strain again.

Taking The Hit: Shiatsu Kush from Cascade Valley Cannabis

Stocking Stuffer Holiday Pre-roll Pack grown and rolled by Cascade Valley Cannabis

Shiatsu Kush is an Indica strain grown by Cascade Valley Cannabis. We had Cascade Valley in our shop recently to debut our new vendor days. Cascade Valley brought in some of every flower that they grow and a ton of wonderful pre-rolls. I bought their Stocking Stuffer holiday pack of pre-rolls and I have been doing an advent calendar of sorts, smoking a different pre-roll every day until Christmas! My favorite so far, to my great surprise, was the Shiatsu Kush.

Stocking Stuffer Holiday Pre-roll packs from Cascade Valley Cannabis

I tend to be a Sativa flower person, and I usually tend to dislike strains with strong terpene notes of petrol or diesel. So imagine my surprise when it turns out that I love an Indica strain with strong notes of petrol and pine. Shiatsu Kush is a fairly high percentage strain at 17% and I only needed about half a bowl to feel a strong high. There was a great amount of body high to this strain, I felt a tell-tale tingling over my skin. The high was heady but not sleep inducing, and I didn't feel a strong urge to eat like I have on other Indica strains. I had a great mood boost, and had a lot of fun watching some 90's comedy movies on Netflix with my partner.

Taking The Hit Double Feature: Marshmallow Bon-Bons from Junk by Leif Goods

We doing a double feature of reviews today for the Marshmallow Bon-Bons one written by Megz, and a second by Anaeka.

Marshmallow Bon-Bons by Junk

JUNK it up! by Megz

Closely affiliated to Leif Goods and Physic Balm comes a new JUNK line, so let's talk about their JUNK.

Currently at both of The Agrestic's we have these tiny little amazing-tasting Vegan chocolate covered marshmallow bon-bon's. Every box comes with 6 deliciously infused salted chocolate covered marshmallows. According to the Suggested Servings listed on the back of the box, a consumer should start at a low dose of just ½ a marshmallow [and while some find this to be the perfect dose, I had to eat a bit more].

After consuming two full bon-bon's, what I had noticed the most was the salt and chocolate fusion. I absolutely LOVED the salty bits mixed directly into the cannabis infused chocolate, as well as the fluffy lightness of the marshmallow itself. I then sat watching TV and doing random things about my house, after a solid hour I began to notice some effects taking on. I was relaxed to the core and to be honest a bit sleepy [as deep relaxation usually send me to sleep] but I was able to keep my composure and finished my tasks before settling on the couch for the rest of the night.

Marshmallow Bon-Bons from Junk

Marshmallow Bon-Bon-Appetit by Anaeka

I had a sore throat recently, and the last thing I want to do with a sore throat is smoke flower or extracts and exacerbate the problem area. I bought these Marshmallow Bon-Bons not just because I wanted an edible to have a fun time with, but because I knew that they could also soothe my sore throat at the same time. The Marshmallow Bon-Bons come in a pack of six, with a total of 40.7mg THC and 56.3mg CBD. Junk is a subdivision of Leif Medicinals, and edibles from Leif  are interesting because they are made with full extract cannabis oil (FECO, also known as RSO). The cannabis in these edibles is only found in the outer chocolate layer, and to me, had no chlorophyll or plant-like flavor to it. The outer-shell of the Bon-Bons tasted like a high quality dark chocolate.  There was a surprising saltiness to the Bon-Bons as they are sprinkled with chocolate salt and the savory quality of the salt mixed with the slight bitterness of the dark chocolate provided a good balance to the sweet marshmallow filling. The marshmallow was a delicious creamy flavor, and seemed denser than a traditional marshmallow that you would buy from the store for making Smores.

The recommended dose is half a marshmallow, but knowing that I have a higher tolerance of about 25 to 30mg THC I ate half of a pack of the Bon-Bons. After about an hour the effects of the Bon-Bons started to kick in for me and it took another hour for the high to fully creep in. I  reached a very comfortable high that lasted for another two or three hours. The first thing I noticed as the high set in was that my throat no longer hurt when I swallowed. In fact I felt terrific, like I wasn't sick at all. A warmth spread over my face and chest, and I had a good body buzz tingling on my forearms and across my face. I felt very goofy and happy, and had a great time watching a movie with my partner. I loved these so much that I bought a second pack the next day, not only is it a tasty treat, but a great high to boot.

Taking The Hit: Puffclear Personal Smoke Eliminator

Puffclear Personal Smoke Eliminator

The Puffclear Personal Smoke Eliminator is a small, discrete, air purifier that uses activated carbon to collect smoke and odor from the air being passed through it. I personally used this product to purify smoke from flower products or extracts. There is some resistance to blowing air through the device, so it takes longer to get rid of a lungful of air than just normally exhaling. Usually this isn’t a problem, but if I get a particularly large or hot pull that causes me to cough, blowing the smoke out slowly through the purifier will just make me cough more around the intake.

The packaging says that the filter should be replaced when you see smoke come out the outtake vent or if the product becomes too difficult to blow through. My partner and I have been using ours daily for the past month and it is still absorbing the smoke and most importantly to me, the odor of the cannabis I’ve been using.  It does become more difficult to blow through as the filter begins to fill up but I think there’s another half or whole month left in the life cycle of this product. If you need to be careful of your use around family or neighbors this is a great product to make your smoking more discrete.
